After a Starbucks breakfast, we headed off to St. Patrick's Church, 4 blocks away, and attended the 10:00 AM mass. We had determined that the tour buses were too expensive, so opted for a guided tour on foot - tips welcomed. We met our guide, Tim, a retired guidance counsellor, at 11:30 AM and set out on a very informative tour of the various monuments and memorials. Tim gave us a lot of inside information and historical facts. We saw, and were told the history of most significant buildings and some monuments from afar, but came up closest with the Washington, WW2 , Viet Nam Veterans and Lincoln Memorial. About 2 1/2 hours later, hungry, tired, and about as far away from our hotel as you can get, we headed back. Did I mention that my camera battery died and I had left the spare at the hotel? We'll buy some post cards.
We had a late pasta lunch and then headed for the Smithsonian Institute American History Museum, which was very popular and also interesting. It has just about everything American in it having to do with history, sociology, politics, technology, wars and entertainment. We saw Judy Garland's ruby slippers! Unfortunately, we didn't have much time there before it closed, so headed back to the hotel to rest our weary legs.
