We set out westward from Sydney by car with Anne and Barry and passed through the town of Katoomba in the Blue Mountains. We went on through winding roads to Janolan Caves, a remote location and tourist attraction first discovered in the mid 1800’s. There is now a number of buildings and different guided tours through various caves. We booked a tour and had lunch. We joined our tour and headed in to the sandstone openings formed 340 million years ago with stalagmites and tites and other features galore. There are concrete steps and handrails – and lighting to enhance the view of various features, some of which have names like Queen Victoria, Madonna, Shark’s Throat, The Noses, Lucinda and the Dragon. We then headed back to Katoomba and found the outlook over the Three Sisters rock formation on the edge of a ravine, which challenges the Waimea Canyon, (miniature Grand Canyon), a local tourist feature. It’s an awesome sight. After that we toured the downtown area of Katoomba, purchased some needfuls, had a beverage at an RSL (Returned Services League) and returned to the hotel to prepare for dinner, which was excellent at a BYO restaurant on the main street.
